Me: Can I let him know who's calling?
SP: Oh! This is Melissa* with XYZ health*, are they available?
Me: (in my head): Do you think I just sign languaged to someone else to check if he was available while I was listening to who you were?! ALSO, I don't think the name MATT is very androgynous... you can ask if HE is available with some asssurance that you're not mixing up "their" gender.
Me: (out loud): Let me check...
Me: Joe, Melissa with XYZ Health is on line 1
Matt: Voicemail
Me: Melissa, he is NOT available, can I put you into his voicemail?
SP: Yes, there's not really a messege... I'll call back later.
(*Names have been changed to make sure I keep my job)
